Why Fight the Conservatives?

PC is Dead!

All major parties under firm leadership, the 40^th Canadian federal election could be called any day. The cries to be bring sanity back to a corrupt system have been quelled. Bills to reopen issues such a gay marriage have been defeated. Harper himself seems to want to reassure us that his party's rectitude has been humbled. It seems like everyone is predicting a Liberal landslide next election, so why do we need to be worried about fighting the Conservatives?

The Conservatives are a sly and power hungry political entity – moralistic – they care nothing about Canada's diversity or economic well being. The Conservatives have surprised everyone in their ability to climb the ladder over the last decade and are experts at taking advantage of everything they can, especially apathy. Three years and as many federal elections, plus the usual dose of provincial and municipal votes has made us tired. When we see things looking our way, its easy to become stagnant.

Every election since their inception, the Reform – Alliance – Conservatives have gained seats influence and power. Forming a minority government has energized them and they will not go into this election lethargic.

In 2005 we made a series of predictions about what a majority Conservatives government might look like. Although these examples seemed extreme to many, and despite the fact that their government was significantly constrained, Harper made many of them come true. Its no longer so hard to imagine that a Conservatives majority could become one of the darkest chapters in our history.

The Conservative Party is a religious one. Its views link sin almost exclusively to sex. If they gain enough seats, the Conservative will break their promise to the Canadian people and bring gay marriage to another vote. Make no mistake: After this passes issues like abortion, contraception, sex education, even divorce will be next.

Its up to each of us to do everything we can to prevent the Conservatives from getting seats. Next election, donate money, volunteer time, and vote for the candidate most likely to win against the Conservative.
